Western Imagination: September 5, 2014 Courtier Cont.

“Not only, but also”: Applies to Everything

Western Imagination (How to be a Gentleman list cont) :

  • Solider (primarily)
  • Scholar (appreciate & understand & produce)
  • Musician (understand, perform vocally and play several instruments, and compose.)
  • Artist

Sculpture vs. Painting

Sculpture:

  • Skill: Can’t make mistake
  • 3-D More life-like
  • Skill at Imitating Nature
  • Durability

Painting:

  • Depicts COLOR of nature
  • Greater scope
  • Light & Shade
  • Perspective

Which is better? Conclusion- none. Each just as good, each perform select skill differently. Both skills are admired.

Question of should courtier even be an artist because to be one he must work with his hands and that is what the commoners do. (really guys), conclusion: They make a special exception.

Then we looked at Brunelleschi, The Pazzi Chapel

“Then the soul, freed from vice, purged by studies of true philosophy, versed in spiritual life, and practised in matters of the intellect, devoted to the contemplation of her own substance, as if awakened from deepest sleep, opens those eyes which all possess but few use, and sees in herself a ray of that light which is the true image of the angelic beauty communicated to her, and of which she then communicates a faint shadow to the body.”
― Baldassare Castiglione, The Book of the Courtier

“Take care lest perchance you fall into the mistake of thinking to gain more by being merciful than by being just; for to pardon him too easily that has transgressed is to wrong him that transgresses not.”
― Baldassare Castiglione, The Book of the Courtier
